High School Juniors and Seniors are Invited to Take Part in Inaugural Rutgers Pre-College Summer Law Academy

Newark, NJ—High School juniors and seniors interested in learning about the law can take part in a mock trial, and learn about legal issues that range from gun control to sanctuary cities from actual law professors, in a new Pre-College Summer Law Academy, sponsored by Rutgers Law School.

The Rutgers Law School Pre-College Summer Law Academy takes place from July 26-Aug. 5.

Normally a residential program offering the opportunity to reside on the New Brunswick Campus of Rutgers University, this summer, the two-week virtual academy, taking place on Zoom, will introduce students to numerous legal topics, including gun control, environmental law, human rights, international law, the Supreme Court, and give them an opportunity to take part in a mock trial.

Applications for the summer academy are available now and the deadline for applying for international students and domestic students is June 7The cost of the two-week intensive program is $999. Students who are eligible are encouraged to apply for available scholarships.  The scholarship application deadlines are April 30 and May 31.

“Through the analysis and discussion of current topical legal issues participating students will become equipped with knowledge, understanding, and skills that will enhance their continuing learning experience in high school, provide a foundation for college and spark their interest in pursuing a legal education,” said Jay Austin, Senior Associate Dean of Enrollment, Rutgers Law School.

Courses will be taught by Rutgers Law School professors, Rutgers Law student teaching assistants and invited guest lecturers. Students will take part in interactive problem-solving exercises and group activities, and have lessons on the Constitution and Sanctuary cities.

This unique summer program joins the list of opportunities that Rutgers Law offers individuals thinking about law school, such as a BA/JD 3 + 3 program for undergraduates and a Hybrid JD Program, that is part virtual and part in-person. Here is the full list of Rutgers Law degree offerings.

It’s never too early for students to begin the study of law, experts say. “Participating in the Pre-Law Summer Program permits earlier exploration of social and political topics that are increasingly critical conversations at the intersection of the rule of law and our democratic society,” said Austin. “The opportunity to begin this exploration at an early age contributes to understanding citizenry and the trajectory of career paths in law.”
