This program, now in its sixtieth year, offers
enrichment courses in science and mathematics on Saturday mornings throughout the school year to
700 students who have been selected from approximately 750 high schools in the metropolitan New
York area. Next year's SHP will have openings for 400 new students. Applicants must now be in the
11th, 10th, or 9th grade and should have a strong interest and exceptional ability in science and
mathematics. I would very much appreciate your informing appropriate students about the program.
The attached announcement can be posted, and copies can be distributed to all science and
mathematics teachers in your school.
The program uses an online application process which students can access on the Columbia
University SHP web page:
http://www.columbia.edu/cu/shp/apply.html
Each applicant will be asked to do the following:
(1) Submit an online application.
(2) Request that the high school mail an official transcript directly to the SHP.
(3) Request that a teacher, guidance counselor, or principal submit an online
recommendation letter.
(4) Take a three-hour entrance examination at Columbia on April 7 or April 21, 2018.
The deadline for the SHP receipt of student online applications is March 1, 2018.
Mailed official transcripts and online letters of recommendation must be received by the SHP no later than
March 15, 2018. Admission decisions will be announced by June 20, 2018.
Going forward, we are hoping to move toward more electronic communication with teachers,
guidance counselors and principals at schools within our catchment area. If you would like to subscribe

John Carroll University

The John Carroll University Young Writers Workshop, a week-long summer camp at John Carroll University, is now offering both day and residential options, so students from all over the country to experience inspiring and rigorous creative writing! This year’s workshop takes place from July 29th to August 4th, 2018. Here’s a video about our program.

In the JCU YWW, students grades 8-12 participate in an immersive writing experience in the craft of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Studying with acclaimed professors, students read, engage in writing exercises, workshop their stories and poems, and experience a pre-college environment. They compose new work, which will be published in our annual anthology. The last day of camp features a reception and reading by the Young Writers.

For more information about the JCU YWW, please visit
http://sites.jcu.edu/yww/. The cost for the day-only option is $380; the residential option is $980. Application deadline for the workshop is May 30, 2018.

As a writer of nine books of poems and prose, I have always sought other writers out to share work and to improve my craft. Community is essential to my experience of being a writer. I founded the YWW in 2010 because I believed that high school writers also craved a space to read, write, and share their work—with established writers and peers. Mentorship and community provide the kindling for the writer’s fiery desire to write great stories and poems. The alums of the YWW have proved me right! For more information about my work,
check out this site.
