In the world of social media, tweets, Facebook, Vine... it’s easy to forget that colleges often keep track of their schools’ social media mentions. Check out this interesting article, posted by the New York Times regarding your college applications...

They Loved Your G.P.A. Then They Saw Your Tweets.

At Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Me., admissions officers are still talking about the high school senior who attended a campus information session last year for prospective students. Throughout the presentation, she apparently posted disparaging comments on Twitter about her fellow attendees, repeatedly using a common expletive.

Perhaps she hadn’t realized that colleges keep track of their social media mentions. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/10/business/they-loved-your-gpa-then-they-saw-your-tweets.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1

This intensive summer financial literacy camp provides a hands-on introduction to financial management and investment for high school students in Northern New Jersey.

Camp Summary

The comprehensive Financial Literacy Camp provides a firsthand introduction to financial management and investment for high school students in Northern New Jersey.
This program, which was launched in 1998, includes lectures, class discussions, research, field trips, and team projects.

Specific topics that are addressed during the camp include:

  • An overview of financial services offered by banking and investment institutions;
  • The structure of the stock and bond markets;
  • Principles of diversification;
  • 2 Field Trips
  • The concept of entrepreneurship;
  • The fundamentals of interest rates; and
  • The role of money and capital markets in supplying funds to business to fuel economic growth
An important component of the program is the team project in which groups of students are assigned to do an investment analysis of a specific Fortune 500 company.  With computer access from our labs, students will learn how to research and analyze investment reports and financial statements. At the end of the program, students present their company as management consultants to NJIT faculty, staff, and corporate leaders.
Another central component of the program includes the two field trips.  On the second day of the program, participants of the program will visit the Leir Retreat Center in Ridgefield, CT.  During this visit, participants will have the opportunity to learn about the legacy of the Leir family and explore their beautiful estate.  For the third week of the program, students will travel to Princeton Blairstown Center in Hardwick, NJ for the experiential learning portion of the program.  Throughout the week students will focus on team building by participating in outdoor games, ropes courses, and the continuation of their group project.
Participants in this camp not only gain understanding of financial management, investment, and economics but develop academic skills, public speaking and presentation skills, learn teamwork from participation in group projects, and develop motivation for academic and professional success.
The camp employs state-of-the-art methodology for teaching financial literacy and provides an innovative model for how the resources of an outstanding university can be leveraged to motivate and empower high school students.

NYT Summer Academy 2019

Announcing Summer Academy 2019!

Welcome!

I am thrilled to announce that applications for  Summer Academy 2019  are now open.

Not only do we have an exciting lineup of courses for next year, we are also launching a brand-new Summer Academy experience in Washington DC. The choice for our second campus was easy: there’s no better place to explore the role of media in a democratic society than in our nation’s capital, and our new DC program offers a special focus on political reporting, public policy and social activism. As always, our flagship New York City program invites students with a broad range of interests—from business to music, fashion, tech and more—to study at the epicenter of culture and commerce.

Through both programs, we use the city as our classroom and invite students to immerse themselves in the iconic neighborhoods, people and culture of NYC and DC. Additionally, we are pleased to announce the return of some of our most popular courses and introduce new offerings.

NYC Course Highlights DC Course Highlights There are many more courses to explore! I invite you to peruse the catalogs for New York City and Washington DC and begin an application once you’ve decided on your top choices.
We’re excited to kick off Summer Academy 2019 and hope to see you this summer.

Sincerely,
Dr. Meghan Groome
Director, Pre-College Programs

Gap Year

Apply Now for Gap Year!

Welcome!

We are excited to announce that applications are now open for our inaugural Gap Year program.

The skills taught at The School of The New York Times are core to being a participant in a global community of thinkers. While we know that not all of our students want to become journalists someday, the writing, critical thinking and persuasive communication skills taught across all of our programs can help guide students' academic and professional paths. Gap Year is no different. The mission of this program is to give you the tools and confidence necessary to explore your interests, develop important life skills and evaluate next steps for your future.

Here is just a taste of what our Gap Year program has to offer:
  • Academic coursework with real-world application. Our courses include topics such as Discovering Your Discipline, The Art of Persuasion and Cultural & Social Exploration. As a student, you will also develop an Independent Learning Project where you can cultivate your own interests while being mentored by a New York Times-affiliated faculty member.
  • New York City as your classroom. Live and learn at the center of culture and commerce. Not only do our academic ventures offer multiple ways to explore all five boroughs, but our Student Life Program will check off the boxes that the classroom doesn’t. You will have limitless opportunities to immerse themselves in the neighborhoods, people and culture of this iconic city.
  • A community of enthusiastic learners. Our careful selection process means that we are working hard to create a strong, diverse cohort capable of tackling the semester with open minds and eyes on the horizon. Planning a future road map can be daunting enough – Gap Year provides a safe, supportive environment to explore possibilities while working alongside experts who will inspire and guide.
If you thrive on unique experiences and meeting new people, then we cannot wait to meet you! Come be part of this first-ever Gap Year program and take charge of your future.

Sincerely,
Dr. Meghan Groome
Director, Pre-College Programs
