Saint Peter's University will once again be holding a summer STEM camp hosted by the SURGE and NOYCE grant faculty. This program will be open to rising Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors and take place the last two weeks in July 2021. Right now we are planning for a virtual camp with the possibility of in person depending on COVID-19 guidelines. More details are in the attached flyer and application form. Space is limited so applying early is beneficial. There is no cost to the student for attending this camp.

Saint Peter’s University Summer 2021, July 19th-July 30th
The Program
Saint Peter’s University has been awarded a grant by the U.S. Department of Education for a project titled, SURGE (STEM Undergraduate Retention Graduation and Empowerment). The SURGE initiative is designed to further increase enrollment, retention, academic performance and graduation of Hispanic students in STEM disciplines at Saint Peter’s. RYSCE STARS is a highly competitive program with limited capacity for high school students through the SURGE initiative that offers research experience and community outreach.
Eligibility
Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (equivalent) or better
Be a rising sophomore, junior or senior
Have sincere intentions to pursue a degree in a STEM field
Special consideration will be given to those who
Have high academic achievement and plan to purse STEM careers
Are low income
Are members in a group underrepresented in earning STEM degrees
Tentative Schedule (PENDING COVID RESTRICTIONS, MAY BE ALL VIRTUAL OR VIRTUAL WITH ONE OR TWO IN PERSON DAYS)
All scheduled days will begin at 9 AM and end at 3 PM with breaks.
Week 1: Introductory Workshops (July 19-23)
The first week participants will be provided a basic understanding about the following:
Proper methods for conducting research
Interactive labs with researchers in Computer Science, Chemistry with modeling, and Anatomy and Physiology
Laboratory Safety
Field trip (Pending COVID restriction)
Week 2: Community Engagement (July 26-30)
Students will have the opportunity to work with Saint Peter’s University scientists and students:
introduction with researchers and interaction labs in various STEM fields including Psychology, Environmental Science, Ecology and Physics
Hands on research with university scientists and students
Field trip for service hours (PENDING COVID RESTRICTIONS)
Additional Programming Information
There will be no cost to the students.
Students must attend each day to fully participate in research projects and community service.
Students may need to provide their own lunch, especially on field trip days.
Students must provide their own transportation to and from Saint Peter’s University campus each day.
