The Writers Institute at Susquehanna University is offering a number of opportunities for high school students interested in Creative Writing, and we want to share them with you in hopes of your passing them along to your students and faculty.

First, beginning January 1st, we will be opening our Call for Submissions for the 2018 edition of The Apprentice Writer. We have been putting a lot of care into improving the publication and hope that students and teachers agree.
  • Our submission period runs January 1st through March 15th.
  • The submission process is now completely online. Students can go to The Apprentice Writer webpage (www.apprenticewriter.com) or directly to the submission page at https://tinyurl.com/apprenticewriter2018
  • We will be recognizing one Outstanding Writer and one runner up in both poetry and prose. The Outstanding Writers will receive $200 each and runners up will receive $50 each.
The Writers Institute will also be offering our 31st Summer Writers Workshop. This weeklong experience offers talented high school writers entering 11th and 12th grade the opportunity to work in intensive, small-group workshops led by nationally recognized authors. Available workshops are fiction, memoir, poetry and screenwriting. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2018 Summer Writers Workshop, which takes place July 22-28, 2018.

Susquehanna and the Writers Institute also offer a free Creative Writing Day event each fall. The 2018 Creative Writing Day will be held on October 22. Students are able to attend this day of readings and creative writing classes with parents or teachers.

Finally, the Writers Institute has begun live streaming many of our readings, including those by prominent and published authors. Students are welcome to visit the Writers Institute Facebook page to view any of our livestreamed readings. They can also follow us on Instagram (@writersinstitute_su) or Twitter (@SU_Writers) to be kept up to date about events and happenings pertaining to the Writers Institute.
