Service Academy Day – February 24th

 

U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Association and Foundation

I would like to share some important information concerning congressional nominations to our nation’s service academies. All students at these institutions of higher education receive full tuition, room and board, and books at no cost.  Four of the five academies - U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), U.S. Military Academy (USMA), U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA), and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) - require applicants to apply for and receive a congressional nomination from either a U.S. Representative or a U.S. Senator.   Congressman Andy Kim is hosting a Service Academy Day February 24th from  10:00 AM to 2:00 PM to learn about the application and nomination process. Representatives from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and the other federal service academies will be there to answer questions. I have attached a flyer with details and registration information that you can share with your students.   High school freshman, sophomores, and juniors interested in attending a service academy are encouraged to attend. Congressional staff will be present to explain the nomination process. Family members, counselors, and educators are welcome. The College LAUNCH for Leadership Program is a free nine-month college prep, social justice, and leadership development program for high school students in North Carolina’s Winston-Salem, Charlotte, and surrounding communities. The 2024 PREFACE Program at Rensselaer

We are excited to share information with you about the 2024 PREFACE Program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute! PREFACE is a summer program for talented students who have been historically under-represented in science, engineering, and the technological fields, and who express a strong, early interest in pursuing careers in these areas. This year’s program will take place in-person, Sunday, July 28 through Saturday, August 10, 2024 (2 weeks), on the Rensselaer campus in Troy, NY. 

The PREFACE Program is for students who will be entering the 11th or 12th grade in the fall. Interested candidates should review the information on the PREFACE website and complete the online application.

Completed applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. ET on April 19, 2024. Notifications will be made to accepted students in early May.

Participate in the RHEx Program: Empowering Future Engineers

Rutgers School of Engineering is launching the RHEx Program, a one-week summer immersion program designed to introduce pre-college students to the field of engineering.

Program Highlights:

• Date: Sunday, June 23, 2024, to Friday, June 28, 2024
• Format: Residential
• Open to: Rising high school seniors
• Activities: Workshops, hands-on activities, labs, and projects
• Culmination: Symposium for families and friends

Key Information:

• Led by experienced School of Engineering faculty, teaching assistants, researchers, and student mentors
• Explores diverse engineering disciplines and career choices
• Offers a unique insight into the field at a crucial pre-college stage
• Students reside in a campus residence hall with meals provided by campus dining

Challenge your students to be a journalist this summer

 

Do you have a student who is up for a fresh challenge? For those who are thinking about a career in communications, enjoy writing or are a visual storyteller, we have just the thing: the Boston University Summer Journalism Academy.  Hosted by Boston University College of Communication, the Summer Journalism Academy offers high school the experience to learn the core skills in news reporting, interviewing, and writing. Students will: Learn from award-winning, working journalists Report on actual events around Boston or (for learn-from-home students) their hometown Improve their writing, interviewing, and research skills – applicable for any major and career Students are challenged to step outside their comfort zone – and experience life as a working journalist. They learned how to interview strangers, ask probing questions, and assemble it in a concise story on deadline. Our on-campus, residential program for three weeks offers students: Meet with Boston University's representative to discuss the college admissions process, Explore what it's like living in a residence hall and studying in a university environment, and Experience Boston museums, historical sites, and neighborhoods during free time. Visual storytellers can apply for our three-week in-person photojournalism program where they will learn from former Boston Globe photographer, Stephen Haines. Application Deadline - March 1 Scholarships Available Do you have sophomores and juniors looking for a summer opportunity? There's still time to apply to Carnegie Mellon's Pre-College Programs. Through Carnegie Mellon's Pre-College Programs, rising juniors and seniors during the summer of 2024 have the opportunity to experience a world-class education on a beautiful, vibrant college campus. Our programs prepare students for their upcoming college experience, help them narrow their career focus, and build critical knowledge and skills. Participants must be 16 years of age by the program start date of June 22, 2024.  Pre-College Programs - Summer of 2024 (scholarships available) Architecture: Introduces design practice, creative problem solving, and critical thinking through a matrix of programming, celebrating curiosity, and providing a strong foundation for architectural education. (5-week program) Art: Uses both traditional tools and cutting-edge technologies to explore creative ideas in a college-level studio environment. Students develop both conceptual and technical skills preparing them for a wide range of opportunities in both art studies and careers. (3- and 6-week program options) Computational Biology: Provides extensive training in both cutting-edge laboratory experiments to generate biological data and the computational analysis of that data. Uses real-world scenarios for exploration. (3-week program)  Design: Introduces students to the discipline of Design, provides a foundation of skills, and gives a clear idea of what to expect from a college-level accredited program. Students interested in art, music and audio, game design, and software development are encouraged to apply for this interdisciplinary program. Students earn college credit while working in an academic setting that mirrors the supportive, rigorous environment of the first year of college.
