Georgetown University Is Offering Two New Online Courses We’re happy to announce that we’re adding two new courses that may interest your students.

Medicine: An Inside Look at Treating Patients Explore treatment plans for three cases: a kidney transplant, vascular disease, and cancer. Students will review the techniques of both integrative and complementary medicine and design a healthcare team for a patient scenario. Journalism and Media in the Digital Age Delves into the fast-paced world of journalism. Students will learn the fundamentals of the field—from recognizing the elements of an accurate, compelling, and fair story to key ethics and laws. They’ll explore the various news platforms—print, digital, social media, video—and craft their own news story on the platform of their choice to demonstrate their knowledge. These courses are designed by renowned Georgetown University professors and delivered through engaging video lessons. NIH STEP-UP Summer High School Research Program - Applications Now Open!

 

Applications are now open for NIH STEP-UP (Short-Term Research Experiences to Unlock Potential). Please submit applications by February 15, 2023. STEP-UP supports high school students from groups that have been historically excluded from science to spend a summer in a paid 8-week internship at research labs near their home. Students work with scientist mentors on a research project that will be presented at an end-of-summer symposium. During the school year, STEP-UP also provides mentorship to prepare students for college and future research.

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory DNA Learning Center STEP-UP Summary: Who: High school Juniors and Seniors from historically excluded groups (e.g. underrepresented minorities, low-income, first-generation college, etc. see full eligibility requirements What: Students will be paired with a research mentor at a research institution near their home. Research may be in any life science research area. Students are expected to work with mentors for an full-time 8-week internship, which will be followed by a presentation of their work at an NIH symposium. Students entering their senior year are also expected to participate in ongoing mentoring. Student stipend for the 8-week experience is $2,760 How: Students must complete an application and submit two letters of recommendation in addition to a personal statement and academic CV. Accepted students will be contacted and the Coordinating Center will help them pair with a mentor of their choice. Students will work at institutions within commuting distance of their home. When: Applications due February 15. Successful applicants will be notified in Spring to begin the matching process. Summer research should start immediately after the end of classes in June 2023. Priority Deadline Feb 15 - UCD High School Summer Program

The UCD High School Summer Program returns for 2023 and applications are now open! The UCD High School Summer Program is an enrichment program designed specifically for North American students who are interested in learning more about Irish history and culture and may be considering the possibility of applying to universities in Ireland for their undergraduate degrees. Through a series of taught lectures and interactive workshops at UCD, we introduce students to the academic culture in Ireland and the variety of subjects they can study. We also introduce students to Ireland's rich history and cultural identity through field trips around Dublin and the Irish countryside. At the end of the two weeks, we hope the students will have found that the academic programs and vibrant cultural heritage will be a great fit for future studies. 

To be eligible for this program, students must:

• Be current juniors or sophomores (16 or 17 at the time of program)

• Demonstrate a minimum 3.0 GPA. 

• Google application form, including two brief essays about their interest in the program and what would make them a good candidate for the program. 

• Counselor recommendation (Kendall Hook will send counselors direct link to Google recommendation form)

Dates: July 6th-21st, 2023

Cost: €3000 (inclusive of accommodation, meals, cultural and academic activities, workshops, in-country transportation. Excluding airfare and personal spending money.)

Priority deadline for applications is February 15. Juniors will receive priority consideration for places on the program. The 2022 program reached capacity by February 15 and operated on a waitlist, however, should availability remain, applications will be open until April 1. This program is non-credit bearing.
