Real Talk: HBCU Edition

Real Talk events were created to provide Black students and their families with the tools they need to start planning for their future. This fall, we’ll connect attendees with Black college reps across the country, financial aid experts with insider tips on finding scholarships, college students who’ll give your students a realistic view of campus life, and Black professionals in tech, sports, and entertainment. We’re kicking off the season with Real Talk: HBCU Edition. During this two-night event, your students will have a chance to see the many options there are to choose from. There are more than 100 historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), so we’ll help them compare and find the schools that deserve a spot on their college list. Night 1 on Wednesday, September 28, at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT, features: • Claflin University • Dillard University • Howard University • Norfolk State University • Spelman College Night 2 on Thursday, September 29, at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT, features: • Fayetteville State University • Hampton University • Morehouse College • Morgan State University • Texas Southern University After this event, students and their families will have a better idea of which HBCUs to consider, and what students will need to start doing to stand out during the application process. The 2022-2023 Profile in Courage Essay Contest is now open!!

I hope this note finds you well, and that the school year is off to a strong start. My name is Esther Kohn—I manage the JFK Library’s annual Profile in Courage Essay Contest. I wanted to be the first to let you know that this year’s Profile in Courage Essay Contest has officially opened to U.S. high school students!

Now more than ever, it’s crucial that students learn about elected officials who were guided by their conscience to make decisions for the greater good. That’s why each year, we invite high school students to submit an essay on an elected official who demonstrated political courage. Twenty-five students will be recognized and the first-place winner will receive $10,000 for college! Essay submissions are now open. The contest deadline is January 13th, 2023.

New Jersey Service Academy Information Day - October 2nd

 

U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Association and Foundation

I would like to share some important information concerning congressional nominations to service academies. Four of the five academies - U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), U.S. Military Academy (USMA), U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA), and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) - require applicants to apply for and receive a congressional nomination from either a U.S. Representative or a U.S. Senator. In addition to their two U.S. senators, applicants to USMMA may apply to any and all members of congress in their state. This affords USMMA applicants more opportunities to secure these coveted appointments.   New Jersey Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker are hosting a Service Academy Information Day Sunday, October 2nd to learn about the application and nomination process. Representatives from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and the other federal service academies will be there to answer questions. I have attached a flyer with details that you can share with your students.   High school and middle school students interested in attending a service academy are encouraged to attend. Congressional staff will be present to explain the nomination process. Family members, counselors, and educators are welcome.
