2019-2020 Academic Year

The Columbia University Science Honors Program (SHP) is a highly selective program for students who have a strong interest in science and mathematics. Classes are held at Columbia from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM on Saturdays throughout the academic year. Applicants for the 2019-2020 school year must now be in the eleventh, tenth, or ninth grade and must apply online. The program is available only to students who attend high schools in New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut and who live within a 75-mile radius of the Columbia campus.

Application Requirements

• A completed online application, including a report of high school grades and an essay describing one's interest and background in science and mathematics.
• An official high school transcript, to be mailed directly to the SHP by the student's high school.
• An online letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor, or principal.
• A $30 non-refundable fee to cover the costs of application processing and test administration.

Entrance Examination

As part of the application process, there will also be a 3-hour entrance examination given at Columbia University. There are two scheduled Saturday dates for the entrance examination in the spring of 2019: April 6 and April 27. Students will be asked to indicate their preferred examination date; however, the SHP cannot guarantee that a student will receive his/her first choice. The examination will be from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM. The test will contain questions in mathematics and science. Students are expected to have a background in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and probability, together with some knowledge of elementary science subjects. No special studying or review is needed for the examination.

Application Deadline

The deadline for SHP receipt of the completed online application is 11:59 PM on February 28, 2019. The $30 fee payment, whether by credit card or check, must also be received by the SHP by February 28, 2019. No applications will be accepted after this date.

Mailed official transcripts and online letters of recommendation must be received by the SHP no later than March 15, 2019.

Hopkins Engineering Innovation Pre-College Summer Program-Scholarships Available

EI is the summer version of a course offered to first year engineering majors at Johns Hopkins University (JHU).  The semester-long course has been condensed into four or five weeks.  During the program, students complete lab activities in computer, chemical, electrical, computer, civil, mechanical engineering, and materials science.  Course materials, including labs and sample quizzes, can be viewed here.  Students who earn an A or B in the class receive three college credits from JHU.

This is a great opportunity for students to try college engineering while still in high school.  They can decide if they want to pursue an engineering major and which field is of the most interest to them.

Need-based full and partial scholarships are available for commuting students.  Students interested in receiving financial aid should apply early.

This course is rigorous, and students must have As and Bs in their high school math and science classes. They also must have taken the following subjects to be eligible to apply:

• Algebra II
• Physics or Chemistry
• Trigonometry, or have learned to use the trig functions – up through the application of the laws of sines and cosines to resolve non-right angle triangles in another math course
• Most students are rising Juniors and Seniors in high school

Force For Good Film Festival for High School Students: Scholarship Prize

Force For Good Film Festival 2019 Created to inspire students to use their cell phones as creative tools, the Force for Good Film Festival seeks submissions of five-minute videos with positive messages from high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. A printable, digital poster to advertise this opportunity at your school is available here. Scholarship Prize  Winners will have their films screened at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center at the University of Notre Dame, and may be eligible to receive a full scholarship to the Notre Dame two-week residential Summer Scholars Program (Film Production track) for either 2019 or 2020.* The scholarship winner will be selected from current sophomore and junior entries. US Naval Academy Summer Programs

The Naval Academy Summer Seminar is a 6-day program that offers current HS juniors the opportunity to experience what life is like for a student at the Naval Academy. Students can attend 1 of 3 sessions held in June; Session 1: June 1-6, Session 2: June 8-13, Session 3: June 15-20. Program information can be found at www.usna.edu/admissions/NASS.

Our Summer STEM camp is a 6-day program that offers current HS freshmen and sophomores the opportunity to gain exposure to various STEM fields through hands-on lab experiments and fields trips in the Maryland/Washington DC area. DuBois Summer Institute at Princeton University

It is a pleasure to invite applicants to participate in the 2019 W.E.B. DuBois Scholars Institute at Princeton University. The Institute will be held on the campus of Princeton University from June 22 2019 to July 27, 2019. Founded in the summer of 1988, the W.E.B. DuBois Scholars Institute provides scholarship and leadership training for high-achieving youth. 

While in residence, participants receive between four and five weeks of rigorous instruction in university-level courses taught by university professors, post-doctoral fellows, and doctoral candidates from top research universities and institutions throughout the country. 

The Institute aims to sharpen students’ research and quantitative analysis skills, as well as writing, verbal, and critical reading skills through a diversity of high-level academic courses. Students entering the Eighth, Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh grades in the fall of 2019 are eligible to participate. 

Please note that scholarship amounts are decided and awarded on a rolling basis upon receipt of application and supporting materials. Early and prompt submission of materials is highly recommended. For scholarship consideration, the application and supplementary materials submission deadline is Friday, February 22, 2019. Following this deadline, online applications and supplementary materials are due no later than Friday March 1, 2019.

The Academic Program
The Summer Writing Institute at Rhodes College takes place annually for two weeks during June and is a residential academic program committed to developing the critical thinking and writing skills of ambitious high school students. Within the college′s liberal arts environment, students sharpen their reading and analytical skills and learn strategies for writing creatively and critically. At the end of the session, students receive a grade for their work and class participation, earn two college credits (transferable to most colleges and universities), and will complete a portfolio of college-level writing.

ACADEMIC OVERVIEW

In addition to coursework and writing seminars, students have the opportunity attend lectures, take advantage of Rhodes' world class facilities, and receive college prep advice from faculty and staff.

SOCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL LIFE

Institute students experience life on campus as if they were Rhodes undergraduates, taking advantage of both the beautiful gothic architecture and state of the art academic and recreational facilities, including tennis and racquetball courts, basketball courts, a weight and exercise room, and a swimming pool. Students take their classes in Palmer, Robertson, and Clough Halls, the central academic buildings on campus, eat meals in the refectory, and live with roommates in the dorms. Select Rhodes undergraduates serve as Resident Assistants who supervise, live and dine with the students. On the weekends and after daily activities, students come together in social settings. Favorite annual events include trips to Memphis landmarks and Open Mic Night.
