At Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Me., admissions officers are still talking about the high school senior who attended a campus information session last year for prospective students. Throughout the presentation, she apparently posted disparaging comments on Twitter about her fellow attendees, repeatedly using a common expletive.

NJIT offers Financial Literacy Camp - FREE!

This intensive summer financial literacy camp provides a hands-on introduction to financial management and investment for high school students in Northern New Jersey.

Camp Summary

The comprehensive Financial Literacy Camp provides a firsthand introduction to financial management and investment for high school students in Northern New Jersey.

This program, which was launched in 1998, includes lectures, class discussions, research, field trips, and team projects.

Specific topics that are addressed during the camp include:

• An overview of financial services offered by banking and investment institutions;
• The structure of the stock and bond markets;
• Principles of diversification;
• 2 Field Trips
• The concept of entrepreneurship;
• The fundamentals of interest rates; and
• The role of money and capital markets in supplying funds to business to fuel economic growth

An important component of the program is the team project in which groups of students are assigned to do an investment analysis of a specific Fortune 500 company.  With computer access from our labs, students will learn how to research and analyze investment reports and financial statements. At the end of the program, students present their company as management consultants to NJIT faculty, staff, and corporate leaders.

Another central component of the program includes the two field trips.  On the second day of the program, participants of the program will visit the Leir Retreat Center in Ridgefield, CT.  During this visit, participants will have the opportunity to learn about the legacy of the Leir family and explore their beautiful estate.  For the third week of the program, students will travel to Princeton Blairstown Center in Hardwick, NJ for the experiential learning portion of the program.  Throughout the week students will focus on team building by participating in outdoor games, ropes courses, and the continuation of their group project.

Participants in this camp not only gain understanding of financial management, investment, and economics but develop academic skills, public speaking and presentation skills, learn teamwork from participation in group projects, and develop motivation for academic and professional success.

The camp employs state-of-the-art methodology for teaching financial literacy and provides an innovative model for how the resources of an outstanding university can be leveraged to motivate and empower high school students.

Announcing Summer Academy 2019!

Welcome! I am thrilled to announce that applications for  Summer Academy 2019  are now open. Not only do we have an exciting lineup of courses for next year, we are also launching a brand-new Summer Academy experience in Washington DC. The choice for our second campus was easy: there’s no better place to explore the role of media in a democratic society than in our nation’s capital, and our new DC program offers a special focus on political reporting, public policy and social activism. As always, our flagship New York City program invites students with a broad range of interests—from business to music, fashion, tech and more—to study at the epicenter of culture and commerce. Through both programs, we use the city as our classroom and invite students to immerse themselves in the iconic neighborhoods, people and culture of NYC and DC. Additionally, we are pleased to announce the return of some of our most popular courses and introduce new offerings. NYC Course Highlights Our signature program, Writing the Big City, returns along with other writing-focused courses, including  Opinion Writing,  Creative Writing and Writing for Television: Inside the Writers’ Room.  We’ve expanded our photography courses to include additional sections of our foundational course Photojournalism as Art, as well as created other important and innovative journalism skill-building courses such as New Media: Podcasting & VR and Sports Storytelling. Highly sought-after arts and culture courses such as  Pop Music as Art and Business and  The Future of Fashion  are back. Do you like Harry Potter? We’ve added Theater in New York: Harry Potter & the Cursed Child from Page to Stage to investigate the amazing production and culture around this worldwide phenomenon. Explore the rise of the international gaming industry in our new Pop Culture: Gaming and The Evolution of eSports courses. DC Course Highlights DC will share some foundational courses with our NYC campus and these are designed to explore the District’s unique culture. Writing the Big City: Washington Bureau will focus on local reporting, and our popular Opinion Writing course has been contextualized for DC as Opinion Writing: Political Commentary. There are also new courses that take advantage of topics unique to our nation’s capital, such as Inside the Hill: Government/Law/Ethics, Explorations: Politics/Punditry/People and Museums to Monuments: Culture in the Capital. Sports continues to be a fan favorite subject during Summer Academy. We’re introducing a new course specially designed for our DC campus called Sports & Politics, which will focus on the biggest challenges currently facing the American sports industry. The skills taught at The School of The New York Times are core to being a participant in a global community of thinkers.
