Spring Application Is Now Open for Columbia University’s Pre-College Programs

Happy New Year! I know it’s only January, but here at Columbia Pre-College Programs, where our summer 2024 application is officially open, we are already looking ahead to sunnier days.

Students who are currently in grades 8-12 may apply for our summer Academic Enrichment Programs to try their hand at over 70 subjects normally reserved for college. For example: Constitutional Law, Investment Portfolio Management, Data Science and Machine Learning, and Introduction to Architectural Design and Theory, to name a few.

We offer online courses and we have two in-person program options in NYC: one for students commuting to campus daily and a residential program with an age requirement of 16 years or older in which students live in on-campus housing. All students may choose from several extracurricular options and workshops while residential students live in our dorms and experience the vibrancy of New York with its numerous museums, neighborhoods, and other entertainment options.

Here is a link to our most recent flyer which will give you all the relevant information about our summer program. For more detailed information, please visit our webpage

The early registration deadline is February 1. Students register for classes after committing to attend the program and admission is rolling; so we strongly recommend students submit an application by February 1 for the best chance of enrolling in their first choice course.

We will also be hosting special information sessions featuring past participants of the program.
Wednesday, January 31 at 8:00PM ET
Thursday, February 8 at 8:00PM ET
Tuesday, February 13 at 8:00PM ET

Never hesitate to reach out to me directly if you have any questions. We would not be able to put together these programs without your support!

West Point's Summer Leadership (SLE) Experience - Register Now!

The United States Military Academy has opened the application for interested students to attend the
West Point Summer Leadership Experience (SLE) during the first two weeks of June (PDF attached).

We are hoping your office will spread the word to your students by posting the attached PDF along with the West Point Fact Sheet.  There will be two virtual meetings about SLE on West Point’s Facebook page January 31st and February 15th.

To many educators, West Point is often seen as off limits to potential Candidates.  Yes, the competition is keen, but we are here to help them find the path that best suits them, including a career as a leader in today’s Army.
  • A West Point education is a FREE FOUR-YEAR SCHOLARSHIP including room and board.
  • A student gets paid over $1100/month while going to school.
  • The large number of humanities and social science majors at West Point.  It is more than an engineering school.
  • All-expense paid internships like working at the National Security Council in Washington, visiting London to watch Shakespeare’s plays, going to Oxford to study philosophy, working at RAND Corp, Council of Economic Advisors, Goldman Sacks, A T Kearney, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and more.
  • $27 million allocated for cadet research supported by 26 research centers.
  • The West Point Graduate Scholarship Program which prepares cadets to compete for fourteen prestigious scholarships including the Rhodes, Marshall, and Fulbright programs.  Last year West Point had 40 graduates win these scholarships.
  • The four pillars of the CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT program not available at any other college.  Character, Academic, Physical and Military.  At West Point, Cadets will learn and incorporate the ideals of loyalty, respect, integrity, courage, and honor in their daily life.  They will learn failure can make them stronger.  Going outside their comfort zone helps them grow.  Character is relevant.  Grit makes the difference in success in life.  Finally, the concept of ‘never, ever quit’ becomes part of their DNA.
  • Participation in one of the 130 Cadet Clubs including Academic, Sports, Hobby, Military, Religious and Support Clubs.

College Scholarship Application Live

Invite your students to apply for more than $50,000 in scholarships to be awarded this summer

As a counselor providing support to high school students, I invite you to share the Men’s College Scholarship with male high school seniors at St. Peters Preparatory School. Help your students feel prepared before they arrive on campus by encouraging them to apply!

The scholarship is designed to identify and reward outstanding high school seniors who have demonstrated an ability to excel in the fields of academics, extra-curricular school activities and community involvement. It is available to any male, graduating senior who is enrolling in a four-year undergraduate college program that commences in the fall of 2024.

Did you know?

Men are going to college with less frequency than in the past, and not persisting to graduation at the same rates as women. Per The Wall Street Journal, at the close of the 2020-21 academic year, women made up 59.5% of college students, an all-time high, and men 40.5%, according to enrollment data from the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC), a nonprofit research group. Additionally, NSC Research Center data shows that during the fall 2021 term, undergraduate enrollment alone fell by 3.1% or 465,300 students.

Men are choosing paths other than college.

In an attempt to counter this trend and encourage young men to pursue a postsecondary education, the Men’s College Scholarship Program was launched in 2022 and in 2023 $55,000 was awarded to 78 deserving applicants. This year we are thrilled to once again offer more than $50,000 in scholarships to inspire college attendance and academic success by young men. Scholarships range from $500-$1,000 and are delivered directly to recipients — not their institution — via ACH transfer to use as desired.

We feel a college education is important and want to assist young men who choose to attend. Please share this application today with your students and their parents/guardians! The deadline for applications is April 1, 2024 at 11:59 pm ET (8:59 pm PT).

Elon Summer Journalism Camp

Year three of the Emerging Journalists Program at Elon University starts tonight – Jan. 16 – with its first virtual workshop. But good news: There’s still time for your students to apply for our workshops and our free, fun and immersive summer experience that’s scheduled for June 17-28, 2024. This on-campus residential learning workshop is open to rising seniors from diverse socio-economic, racial and ethnic backgrounds. And, again, it’s completely free, thanks to a generous grant from the Scripps Howard Fund. EJP pays for students’ travel, lodging, meals and instructional materials, so now’s the time for your students to submit their applications.

Last year’s summer cohort produced a newspaper, a 40-minute newscast and a website. Here’s a snapshot of what our students did while on campus with us.

If you think the Emerging Journalists Program would interest your students, please have them apply at www.elon.edu/ejp. And if you’d like to talk more, please reach out to Colin Donohue (cdonohue@elon.edu) or Kelly Furnas (kfurnas@elon.edu). We’ll begin to review applications for the summer soon, and we hope to see some from your students.
